Does version 1 of a startup always take much longer than expected?

Usually.
We shipped the first version of Lanyrd in two weeks, but that’s because we had worked on previous projects which took a year longer to release than we had expected (“just one more feature and it will definitely be ready”) and we were absolutely determined not to make the same mistake.
(We also got super-lucky in that our first feature—seeing events your twitter contacts were planning to attend, basically the only feature we launched with—turned out to be useful enough to consist of an MVP in its own right).
